Out of the Ordinary has just launched a new website in conjunction with our Original Site designed by me and the talented staff at Next Wave Web Services. It is fun, informative and unique. The site is complete, but each of the pages are not. I am going as fast as I can. This site is taking place of our newsletter! We will be changing it often and adding new exciting info! So please keep checking back! It is meant to see the fun side of me in addition to the professional side on the original site.

This site is meant to be interactive ---so please let me know what topics you would like to hear about.

Home Weddings

I decided to blog on the topic of tented weddings because so many for some strange reason - people think that having a wedding or large event in their back yard or a park is cheaper than having it in a traditional venue!!! This ALWAYS MAKES ME LAUGH!!!!!

Weddings at home are my favorite --- However before you start planning your wedding at your home their are TONS of things you have to think about ---- Not only do you have to rent a tent, but then there are tables, chairs, linens, china, glassware, tableware, bar-ware -- etc., etc. In addition to that you will need to rent a dance floor, think about restrooms, lighting and parking!!!

Depending on quality and quantity---- your rentals will be anywhere from $5,000 and UP. It ALWAYS costs about 20% more to host your event at your home.

If you can get past the cost - Tented events are very beautiful and can be made to be very personal. You are working with a blank canvas!

If you are considering having your wedding at home you will need lots of help. If you can't hire a planner, enlist a friend or family member to help

AN "OUT OF THE ORDINARY" IDEA!

Traditionally, the wedding rehearsal and rehearsal dinner is the day before the wedding!!! I have been suggesting to my clients that they try something a little different --- having their rehearsal and dinner on the Thursday before the wedding leaving a day in between to relax and get ready for the big day without rushing and feeling flustered and overwhelmed.

You will have time to finish packing for your honeymoon, go for a spa day with your friends or have a special day with your family! Another great idea is to have a quiet, romantic dinner with your fiance before you say "I DO."

I have noticed a huge difference in my clients that take the extra day to catch their breath!

SAVE YOUR CHRISTMAS CANDLES

Don't pack or throw away your red, white, silver or gold Christmas candles - carefully remove any Christmas ornaments, ribbons, wreaths, etc from the candle and put them aside for Valentines day.

Make sprays and wreaths out of red roses, heart ornaments or picks that you can buy from any craft store.

Another idea is to use straight pins to attach pearls, sequences or beads to the candle. Anything sparkly, or shimmery will turn a Christmas candle into a romantic Valentine's Day Candle!!!!

Holiday Decorating Tips!

Do you have old jewelry you don't know what to do with ---- use it to decorate!!! Buy a small artificial tree and put it in a colorful pot -- or spray paint a clay pot a bright color or a metallic. Insert florist foam into the pot (available at any craft store) Secure the tree in the foam.

Decorate the tree with old sparkly necklaces, broaches, rings - etc. If the tree looks too empty - add metallic Christmas ornaments - it will brighten up a drab hallway or corner.

Anyone who knows me well, knows I LOVE FEATHERS!!!! Feathers are now HUGE for weddings. They are not only being used in centerpieces but in bouquets, boutonnieres, decoration on shoes and even in the brides hair!!!

It is a great idea for the "Funky" bride who wants to be a little "edgy." The feathers don't have to be white -- anything goes!!! My favorite are peacock feathers!!!

TIME TO BREATHE

Well --- It has been quite awhile since I have posted!!!! My wedding season has come to an end with the exception of one December Wedding -

I have been busy revamping and regrouping and getting ready for the "BOOKING SEASON" for next year....although our FALL is pretty booked up already! :)

I am going to lay low for a couple of weeks --- then start back in!!!! The weddings we have already booked are very cool weddings with great color schemes and locations!!!

I was very blessed this past year with great couples that were so much fun to work with and it looks like I am equally as blessed this year. I love all my new couples and look forward to getting to know them and helping them to create their special day!!!!

Incorporating the past (Heirlooms)

I am asked all of the time the best way to incorporate family heirlooms into the bride's attire.

Broaches are great to pin on your bouquet stem wrapping - or any type of Jewelry can be incorporated in to the actual flowers themselves. This is really nice because they are visible and can be seen by your guests.

One of my brides had her grandmothers pearls incorporated in with the flowers and around the stem wrap. It was beautiful!

If you are not a sparkle girl --- you can take a piece of fabric from your mom's or grandmother's gown and have that wrapped around your flowers stems.

Metals and other memoibilia that is special to you can be pinned inside of your dress somewhere. If your dress allows, you can pin it on the part of your dress that is closest to your heart!! (You will just have to pin it carefully as not to have the pin show through)!

Sometimes I get my bridal magazines in the mail, flip through the pages and see "SAME OLD - SAME OLD"!!! I have been having a great time today with my new Brides New York Magazine! These dresses pictured are part of the "DESSY COLLECTION" -- ALFRED SUNG -- Pantone Wedding Colors. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!!! I am all over the black and chocolate brown weddings --- 2010 and 2011 weddings are all about bright colors amd artful flowers!!!! One Shoulder Strap Dresses

CROWNING CEREMONY (Greek Orthodox)

The crowning is a centerpiece of an Eastern Greek Orthodox wedding ceremony.

Garland wreaths are often fashioned into ornate crowns as a symbol of glory and honor. Crowns can also be made of orange blossoms, myrtle leaves or semiprecious stones and metals.

Threads of gold and crimson are sometimes used to represent the royalty of marriage.

A person of honor is chosen to present the couple with two crowns joined by a white ribbon symbolizing their union.

UNITY CEREMONIES (Greek Isles)

Every wedding ceremony usually consists of some sort of "Unity Ceremony." The most common is the "Unity Candle" which is practiced in most Catholic and Christian ceremonies.

Each culture and nationality has its own version of a unity ceremony. I have been privileged to work on several different ethnic weddings, and witnessed that cultures special symbol of unity!

Lately, several of my clients have been asking me for different ideas for unique unity ceremonies. Over the next several days, I am going to post different types of unity ceremonies. You will see, even though some are so different, they all have a common thread!!

HONEY WALNUT CEREMONY ( THE GREEK ISLES)

This unique unity ceremony happens at the end of the wedding ceremony, not in the middle as most unity ceremonies do. The bride and groom offer to each other honey and walnuts out of a silver spoon. Honey symbolizes the sweetness of marriage. Walnuts are used because they naturally break into four pieces, symbolizing the bride and groom and their two families!

Marriage License

Marriage license guidelines and requirements are determined by each state and change from time to time. I always recommend that you call your local marriage bureau to get the most updated information.

· You and your fiancé must go to the marriage license bureau together. Register prior to 4:00 p.m. since most bureaus are closed after then.

· Some states require you to get a blood test or medical exam.

· If you are under 18 years of age your parents must accompany you with proper identification. (driver’s license, birth certificate, passport or military ID)

· Applicants born outside of the USA may need to bring additional information and identification.

· There is a license fee that varies from state to state, and some bureaus require cash only. New York State is $40.00.

· For re-marriages bring divorce papers.

· The marriage license is issued on the same day you apply and is not valid until 24 hours after it is issued.

· The marriage license is only valid for 60 days.

NOTE: If your wedding is taking place in a different state than where you reside, you need to check with the local licensing bureau for the correct information for that area. REMEMBER THAT YOUR LICENSE NEEDS TO BE OBTAINED FROM THE STATE WHERE YOU ARE GETTING MARRIED, NOT WHERE YOU RESIDE.

More and more bakeries are now offering their clients an "Anniversary Cake" on their first anniversary so they don't have to freeze the top of their cake. For anyone who has ever saved their wedding cake top, you know how awful it tastes after sitting in your freezer for a whole year! ha ha

If you are a traditionalist, and really want to save your wedding cake top - try cutting your “take home” wedding cake into 12 slices before you freeze it and share a piece of wedding cake to celebrate your anniversary each month for your first year of marriage.

Be sure to consider postage costs when you are choosing your invitations. Some larger styles, or unusual shape styles will require higher postage. Also to over last minute additions to your guest list, order 10% more invitations than you this you may need and 25% more envelops, in case you or your calligrapher make a mistake in the addressing.

This weekend's wedding was so much fun to work on. The groom, Joe, is Italian/Irish and the bride, Chawee (Lee) is from Thailand -- In fact, they both live in Thailand and traveled here for their wedding

This wedding ceremony was rich in tradition and culture. The ceremony consisted of both American and Thai traditions and was really touching.

I tell all of my clients that they should personalize both their ceremony and reception to reflect their personalities, heritage and family traditions. That is what makes each wedding different and memorable!

Outdoor Wedding

There is nothing more beautiful than outdoor ceremony……..If the weather is perfect…that is!!

Depending on what part of the country you live in….the chances of ”PERFECT WEATHER” is 50/50.

Below are some tips for you to follow to help make your outdoor ceremony everything you dreamed it would be.

· SELECTING THE TIME: You should consider the month of your wedding when selecting the time for your ceremony.

o Spring or fall: The middle of the afternoon is a good choice when the sun is the warmest.

o SUMMER: Late afternoon or early evening works best when the sun is beginning to set and not blazing on your guests.

· HAVE A BACK-UP PLAN: Weather can be VERY unpredictable, you never know when a thunderstorm or windstorm may blow in. Make sure there is an inside location available a your site that you can use in case of bad weather. If thee is not, you should rent a tent

· MAKE YOUR GUESTS COMFORTABLE: What will you do if it rains? The ideal outdoor wedding location has an indoor location waiting just in case.

Many brides and grooms opt to have their ceremony outside and reception inside. In a pinch, the tables can be moved to the back of the room during the ceremony.

A tent is another option, but only for light to moderate rain storms. A heavy rain will soak the ground underneath, leaving guests with soggy and muddy shoes. Make sure any tent you rent is sturdy so it won't flip over, and that it has thick and weighted sides.

· MAKE YOUR GUESTS COMFORTABLE: Take a few steps to ensure your guests comfort at an outdoor ceremony:

o Have large tubs of ice water available as your guests arrive or have your usher hand out bottled water as they seat your guests.

o Print your programs on fans.

o Check the weather report the week of the wedding and if the forecast is HOT…rent some fans!

o If you are not having a tent, have a basket of sunscreen available. Some guests may not realize that they will be out in the sun and not be prepared.

· PREPARE FOR THE WIND: Not only do you have to think of the rain and the blazing sun, you need to “ Mother Nature’s” friends…THE WIND!!!

If you are having a unity ceremony, consider a sand ceremony or wine ceremony instead of the traditional “Lighting of the Unity Candle.” If you must have a candle, make sure you have it in glass…..but even then……remember….you have to light a match or torch to light the candle and that may be difficult.

Tell your hairstylist that you'll be having an outdoor wedding so she/he can plan a style accordingly..

· SOUND SYSTEM: Look into renting a sound system with clip mikes for the bride, groom and officiant. Your DJ or band may be able to easily arrange this for you.

· DECORATIONS: One of the bonuses of an outdoor wedding is the natural beauty around you. Work with that, not against it.

If you have an idea in your mind for decorations, make sure you select a site that will support your ideas.

Visit the site a week before your wedding to make sure the grass is mown, the ground raked, and the flowers have bloomed. If your wedding is at a public park, you may want to ask the groomsmen to do this the morning of your ceremony. If it's been an especially cold season, you may need to supplement the flowers with some potted bulbs from a florist. Other decorations you may want to consider include an arch or trellis to focus the ceremony and frame the bride and groom as they say their vows.

· MUSICIANS: Strings or a harp are great instruments of an outdoor wedding…..but remember….Instruments do not like the hot sun…make sure there is a shady spot under a big tree or arrange for a canopy for the musicians to sit under.

· DON’T INVITE PESTS: Ask the management of your ceremony site if they spray for pests. If they don’t, be sure to provide citronella candles or a bug zapper so that your guests won't spend the whole ceremony swatting at the air.

· PERMITS: Don't forget to contact your city parks department or other local government to get a permit for an outdoor wedding. Be sure to ask about rules concerning trash removal, candle or torch lighting, and pre-wedding photography.

Bridemaids Attire

For several years, brides have been selecting a bridesmaid dress designer and a fabric, then letting their bridesmaids choose the style that works best for their bodies. But the 2010 wedding trend takes idea further.

Choose only a color, then let your bridesmaids find an off-the-rack dress of any designer that they like. Not only does this take some pressure off of you, but it also ensures that women are choosing a dress they like and they'll be likely to actually wear again. If you follow this trend, be sure to tell your bridesmaids how formal the dress should be – you don't want one bridesmaid wearing a casual sundress while another has on a beaded evening gown.

One of my brides went on a shopping trip with her 3 bridesmaids. They had a great time spending the day together and they each bought a dress off the rack that they loved and the bride was there for input!

Wedding Cake Service

Every wedding, I see so much cake wasted!! Some people just do not like cake! (Wish I was one of them...ha ha)!

I always suggest to my clients to order cake for fewer people (example: for 200 guests, the cake should serve 130 people) and then order pastries and/or cookies. Guests like to have choices and it always looks great on the table along with an elaborate coffee/tea station, whipped cream, cinnamon sticks, chocolate shavings, etc.

Serving the cake as a dessert at each place setting just does not work! It takes 45 minutes to an hour for the cake to be cut, plated and served. By that time your guests are up dancing, visiting or getting a drink at the bar. Sometimes they never return to their table and never see the cake. It always works much better when the cake is displayed on a station.

REMEMBERING YOUR WEDDING GOWN!

After the sales person searched records etc., it was determined that it was her dress---She just didn't remember it.

The sample that she had originally tried on had a white sash, she ordered the dress with a colored sash and so it looked different to her.

I was not working with this particular bride when she ordered her dress and therefore, had no records.

One thing I always do when I go with a bride to order a dress is to take a picture of the dress. As long as you are purchasing the dress, stores usually do not care if you take a picture.

In this case, the bride ordered her dress in August, but her dress did not arrive until December and it’s easy to remember things differently then they are.

My advice is to ALWAYS TAKE A PICTURE of your dress the day you order it and look at it frequently!!

REMEMBERING YOUR WEDDING GOWN!

After the sales person searched records etc., it was determined that it was her dress---She just didn't remember it.

The sample that she had originally tried on had a white sash, she ordered the dress with a colored sash and so it looked different to her.

I was not working with this particular bride when she ordered her dress and therefore, had no records.

One thing I always do when I go with a bride to order a dress is to take a picture of the dress. As long as you are purchasing the dress, stores usually do not care if you take a picture.

In this case, the bride ordered her dress in August, but her dress did not arrive until December and it’s easy to remember things differently then they are.

My advice is to ALWAYS TAKE A PICTURE of your dress the day you order it and look at it frequently!!

Let’s face it…traditional showers can be so BORING!

You sit for hours and watch the bride-to-be open a thousand presents and you think it is NEVER going to end! Here are some ideas to cure the boring, and create “OUT OF THE ORDINARY” showers.

THE BOOK SHOWER:

Perfect for the bride who loves to read!

Invitations: Send a paperback book to each guest with a homemade jacket, listing all of the party information. Example: Title: A shower for (bride’s name) Author: name(s) of hostess(es); etc.

What to serve: Re-create a famous fictional food, like the tea party from Alice in Wonderland; allude to literary food such as vegetable stew or soup from Mr. McGregor’s garden in Peter Rabbit.

Gifts for the bride: A bookcase, his and hers reading lights, cookbooks, bookstore gift certificate, wedding photo album, guest book and pen, any type of reading material.

THE GARDEN SHOWER:

Great for the bride who loves to garden!

Invitations: Clip them to assorted seed packets.

What to serve: Think of a summer garden: tomato and basil salad, ratatouille, pasta with veggies, etc.

Gifts for the bride: A gift certificate to a garden store, tools, watering can, rosebush, lawn ornaments, lawn furniture, anything pertaining to the lawn and garden.

THE WEDDING NIGHT SHOWER

Great for the bride who has everything!

Invitations: Buy do-not-disturb signs from a paper supply store or call a hotel and they will sell them to you for a small charge. Write all party information around the borders, using a permanent marker.

What to serve: Room service food—champagne, finger sandwiches, chocolate bonbons, etc. Or for a real indulgent treat, have the party in a hotel room and order real room service!

Gifts for the bride: Overnight bag, perfume, bubble bath, lingerie, etc.

KIDNAPPED:

For the bride who loves adventure!

Invitations: Ransom notes. Paste individual letters in different typefaces from magazines and newspapers on a sheet of paper and photocopy! Specify that the guests come very casually dressed (come as you are; bathrobes, large shirts, no make-up, etc.). It will add to the fun and the atmosphere!

What to serve: Pizza right from the box, subs in the wrappers they come in, junk food (in the bag of course!) NO PLATES, maybe a napkin! Instead of cake, “GOODIES” in the original boxes!

Gifts for the bride: Cellular phone, writing paper, briefcase (with or without unmarked notes), clock, etc.

DON’T FORGET A RANSOM NOTE TO THE GROOM!

A “DAY AT THE SPA” SHOWER

Great for the bride who loves to be pampered!!!

Invitations: Tee shirts with (bride’s name) “MARY’S SPA” painted on the front with fabric paint in bright colors on the top, and all the party information written underneath in smaller letters. You can get creative and paint flowers or other art work around the lettering!

What to serve: Great salads, grilled chicken breasts, mixed veggies with low fat sauces, shrimp, etc.

Gifts for the bride: Massage oils, bath products, monogrammed terry robes for him and her, monogrammed towels, manicure/pedicure sets, a gift certificate to a spa, etc.

A DAY IN THE COUNTRY

For a bride who has her heart in the country, and loves the outdoors!

Invitations: Paste gingham fabric to plain note cards in the shape of hearts, stars, diamonds, etc. Paint around edges of fabric with fabric paint. Write party information inside with markers.

What to serve: Picnic food…chicken, potato salad, corn on the cob, brownies, lemonade and iced tea with fresh lemon slices. Low fat varieties of the above can be made for the weight conscious party! Serve on blankets on the floor or in back yard if possible. This would be a good party to have in a park.

Gifts for the bride: Picnic basket, grill, car blanket, quilt, Frisbee, portable CD player.

SPORTS SHOWER* (Can be Co-ed)

Great for the sports-minded bride and groom!

Invitations: Inflate a beach ball, write party information on it in permanent marker, deflate, and mail in manila envelopes. Also, if budget allows, you can write information on basketball, football, baseball, etc., mail in small packages. This could be a couple’s shower, with the groom’s favorite sport in mind to make him a part of it! Have the shower at a baseball field, etc. depending on what sport you choose. Have lots of sports memorabilia around to use as decorations!

What to serve:: Hot dogs of course! Also, peanuts in the shell, popcorn, pizza, nachos, chicken wings, ice cream, etc.

Gifts for the bride & groom: Matching sweat shirts with their favorite team’s logo, sport bottles or mugs, stadium blankets, tickets to a pro game (after the wedding date, when they are ready to relax), other sport memorabilia.

Planning a wedding is very exciting, but forethought and organization are crucial elements to a successful wedding day.

Every wedding needs to consider the following:

SET A BUDGET: To keep your spending under control, prioritize the services that are the most important to you.

CHOOSE YOUR CEREMONY AND RECEPTION SITE THOUGHTFULLY: It should reflect your beliefs, type of ceremony & reception you envision, and the number of guests the site can accommodate.

SAVE-THE-DATE CARDS: Go against tradition and create unique “Save The Date” reminders informing guests about special events, locations or themes.

INVITATIONS AND STATIONARY:. Beware of oddly shaped invitations, as they will require more postage.

FLOWERS: Find a floral designer you can trust!!!!! Will they be open to your ideas and make suggestions to stay within your budget?

SAVE THE DATE CARDS

As soon as you become engaged, you should send out “SAVE THE DATE CARDS”. You do not have to spend a lot of money on these, and you can even make them on your own computer using pretty paper. In today’s busy times it is a good idea to alert your guests of your date so they can plan ahead.

Many couples choose to send pre-wedding letters in place of save the date cards. The letters can relate other activities that the guest will be invited to such as luncheons, rehearsal dinner, golf outings and brunches.

WEDDINGS ARE GOING GREEN

Green weddings are getting more and more popular. Some people want a totally green wedding while some are choosing to just do a little something that is ecologically friendly.

I get asked all of the time for ideas on "green" planning!!!

I have created a guideline to help you get started!

~Wedding Gown - Think Vintage --- or wear your mother’s, grandmother’s dress or borrow one from a friend.

~Invitations - Buy invitations made with recycled paper.

~Food : Serve vegetarian and organic entrees. Donate left over food instead of throwing it out.

~Flowers: Find a florist that uses flowers from local organic farms.

~Programs: Print programs on recycled paper. Limit programs to one per couple instead of one per person.

~Favors: Give bookmarks made of recycled paper or cloth, seed packets or tree saplings.

~Venues: Choose a reception venue close to your ceremony venue, or choose a site that will accommodate both your ceremony and reception. Minimize the amount of driving your guests will need to do.

If we all make simple little changes, our earth will remain clean and safer for generations to come.

REMEMBERING YOUR WEDDING GOWN

One of my brides called me right before Christmas to tell me that her gown was in the store. She was so excited to see it---we went the next day. When she saw the gown she became very upset and said it was not her dress.

After the sales person searched records etc...it was determined it was her dress---She just didn't remember!

I was not working with this particular bride when she ordered her dress...so I had no records on it.

OUT OF TOWN GUESTS

Every time I go to a hotel --- no matter where it is -- I see guest bags piled, dropped off by brides for their out of town guests.

While making your guests feel welcome is important, there are better ways then giving them a bag with candy, snacks and water!

I have listed some alternatives to guest bags.

A hospitality room on the night most of your guests will be arriving with sandwiches, soda, water, cookies etc -- They will appreciate something to eat after a long day.
Free Breakfast - If your hotel does not offer a free breakfast, you can provide them with one even if it is only a continental breakfast.
A bud vase with one red rose in their room.
A fruit basket in their room
A bottle of wine with 2 glass you can purchase from the Dollar Store or The Christmas Tree Store in their room with a personalized wine opener.

Also, you should always make sure that your guests are provided with a folder including a map of the city, special attractions, names and numbers of spas and some post cards. Most of these items can be obtained at your local chamber of commerce.

Be creative --- your guests will love it!

Sangria

When we were on one of our cruises, there was a Sangria bar. The bartender was this very cute girl from the Philippines, Mary.

Needless to say, we made great frineds with Mary (ha ha)....it was the best Sangria we ever had!!! Our last day, she gave us the recipe -- I love making it around the Holidays. It is festive, easy to make and the hit of the party!!!

We have also used this recipe at weddings and Events for a signature drink!

SANGRIA

1 bottle of dry red wine
1/4 C. of brandy
1/4 C. of light rum (I use Bacardi)
1/8 C. triple sec
1 liter ginger ale
1 C. sugar (I use 1/2 sugar and 1/2 splenda)
1 apple
1 pear
1 orange
1 lemon
1 lime

Mix wine, brandy, rum, triple sec and ginger ale together in a large jar with a tight lid or a pitcher with a tight lid. Cut fruit in small pieces, add to wine mixture. Cover jar or pitcher with lid and refrigerate for at least 12 hours before serving. Garnish with a fruit slice. (You can also add blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, cranberries, etc.)

THANKSGIVING CENTERPIECE

I have taught several Holiday Decorating classes during my career as a Wedding/Event Planner/Designer---The one thing I always "stress" is utilizing materials you already have in your house or something that you can purchase inexpensively at the grocery store or craft store.

Years ago, my mom came up with this great centerpiece that is simple, easy and relatively inexpensive -- A Pineapple Turkey!!

Cut a double turkey head out of brown felt and stitch it together. (I use hot glue) Use red felt for his neck, Yellow or orange for his beak and "google" eyes. (Use image above as your guide).

Lay the pineapple on its side, slip the turkey head over the round end of the pineapple...the pineapple top is his feathers. If you have problems keeping the head on the pineapple, use toothpicks.

Thanksgiving is only a couple of weeks away. Entertaining your family and friends does not have to be expensive.

Make centerpieces from supplies you already have around the house---Large vases with candles and fall leaves, a bowl full of glass or real gords, a container full of leaves, pumpkins and fall ornaments make lovely centerpieces.

Instead of purchasing several types of alcohol, make a signature cocktail such as sangria, pumpkin or Apple Martini's, or Cinnamon Champagne Cocktails.

From now to Thanksgiving I will be posting fun holidays ideas and recipes -- so keep checking back!

Videographer

I cannot tell you how many times I hear from my clients that they don't want to hire a videographer because they are trying to save money and feel it is not a necessary expense.

This summer one of my assistants was married. Her Mom felt that way as well. After the wedding she told me how sorry she was she did't have a video because she missed so much!

You spend so much time and money planning your wedding that you don't want to miss a minute of it. With so many guests, photo sessions, etc., it is impossible NOT to miss something.

I have been married 22 years and we watch our video every year on our anniversary -- now for us it is a precious memory since our parents, grand parents and other family members are no longer with us. It is so great to remember them so happy!

A videographer can cost anywhere between $1,000.00 and $5,000.00 depending on what services you want.

If you really feel you want a video but can't afford it, look around and find someone that will give you the unedited footage...that will cost MUCH less since the editing takes so much time!!

Also, you may want to think about just having the ceremony taped.

There are options available to you, so don't cross a video off your list until you have researched all of the possibilities.

BEWARE OF BRIDAL SHOWS

Tis the Bridal Show season!!

I have had brides hire me after they have hired vendors. I always ask where they found those vendors...9 out of 10 say "A BRIDAL SHOW."

Some brides have hired these vendors right at the show....and haven't even sat down with them to talk....and then find out later that they really can't meet their needs.

A common misconception is that if a vendor is at a show, they must be the best.

Bridal Shows are NOT JURIED! You don't have to be good at your craft to be in a show, you just need to pay the fee associated with the booth!

Don't get me wrong -- some very fine vendors attend shows...you just need to make an appointment with them to sit down and talk about your expectations and find out if the vendor offers the services you want.

NEVER hire a vendor at the show itself....you don't have enough time at a show to interview the vendor properly.

Lets face it --- your wedding is in your vendors hands --- so you need to give the selection process the proper attention it deserves!

If you decide to go to a show -- here are some tips:

Have address labels ready for the drawings otherwise you will be filling out your information 20 times!!!
If you see a vendor with great work, get basic info and book an appointment at the show...DO NOT HIRE THE VENDOR AT THE SHOW! Sometimes you get a discount for simply making an appointment at the show.
If you see a gown that you LOVE in the fashion show...make sure you write down the info about the dress, number, designer, etc. If you go to the salon a couple of weeks later and you don't have the info, they probably won' t remember what dress you are talking about.
If you win a prize, make sure you collect the prize that day. If they tell you that you have to go to their business to collect the prize, make sure you get everything you won in writing. Depending on what you won, if they do not have it at the show is a RED FLAG!

Shows can be a lot of fun and very informative if you approach them with an open mind!!

A VISIT TO HIGH SCHOOL

Senior Picture ---- 1971

Since I have been "FACEBOOKING" I have been in touch with several of my high school classmates that I haven't seen since graduation in 1971!

Our 40th anniversary from school is approaching (2011) so being the planner that I am, I decided I am going to plan a reunion!!!

Three of the "girls" I graduated with and myself decided to meet for lunch and reunite....we had such a great time, and thankfully they offered to help me with this new project!! ha ha

In anticipation of our lunch, and of starting to plan this event, I called Good Old East High School and asked where I could get my hands on a year book. After getting put through to several extensions, I finally spoke with someone in the library who said they had one I could have . So off I went to this place where I had spent so much time many moons ago!

I parked my car and walked in the front door, where immediately the 38 years of changes hit me in the face..METAL DETECTORS monitored by ARMED (real guns!! ha ha) security officers!!!!

After going through security and signing in three different places in the main office, I was finally given a "HALL PASS."

I made my way to the stairs, and to the second floor ...as I walked down the hallway, I noticed that the hallway monitors of the 60's and 70's were also replaced by armed security officers!!

When I finally got to the library, I noticed it hadn't changed much.... except...... typewriters were traded in for flat screen computers, and it was a lot noisier than I remembered. After I got my year book, I struck up a conversation with the librarian who was a very nice "YOUNGER" woman. I was telling her the way things were during my 4 years at East.

She asked if I was interested in a tour of the building.....I jumped at the chance. Some areas such as the cafeteria, the offices, auditorium and courtyards looked as if time had not passed at all!

One thing I remembered that I always liked about East were all of the common areas....there were little area's throughout the school where you could just go and "HANG." Not so any more. There is a large window enclosed hallway type room in the middle of the school with window seats called the "COMMONS," that is now closed off except for during lunch when the seniors can go there. The rest of the day, it is used as a hallway, again, filled with security.

It was a bitter-sweet experience .......while so many memories flooded back, It was sad at the same time that the East High that I went to was no longer there!

PLANNING A WEDDING IS LIKE BUILDING A HOUSE!!

I cannot tell you how many times during my career that a bride comes to my office in tears and very upset because she is having a hard time getting everything done!!! Most of the time, there is a year or more before the wedding-----it makes me laugh, but at the same time I feel so bad that the planning phase of the most special day of your life is causing so much stress!

DOES THIS SOUND LIKE YOU?

The reason this happens is because you are looking at the ENTIRE PICTURE instead of breaking it down.

I plan between 15 and 20 weddings every year. If I looked at the entire picture of 20 weddings I would loose what is left of my mind! ha ha ha ha

There is an order you should follow to plan your wedding. I have an analogy that will help you
to start planning your wedding and stay on track without stressing out.

PLANNING A WEDDING IS LIKE BUILDING A HOUSE!! This analogy is on my website!! Print it out and follow it....You will find by breaking down the different parts of your wedding, you will actually enjoy planning your day!

I was watching "SAY YES TO THE DRESS" today! (Yes I watch wedding shows, and usually laugh or feel the planners pain!!! ha ha)

Today I felt the bride's pain! Her mom HATED every dress she tried on! In a different segment, the bride brought several people with her -- her mom, her future mother-in-law, sisters, girlfriends, Oh My God, there about 15 people....None of them liked the same dress, they tore this poor bride apart till she was sobbing!

I cannot tell you the number of times this has happened to me. I have accompanied brides to find their perfect dress.....besides me, they brought several people.....and chaos is always inevitable!

One bride loved a gown so much, and her mother went as far as to tell her that if she insisted on buying that particular dress, she was not attending the wedding.

As you can guess, she bought the dress of her mother's dreams and was very unhappy!

I can't tell you sad that makes me. Your dress is one of the most important purchases you will make for your wedding day.

I believe that if you are not happy with the way you look, even if everyone else loves the look, you will not feel beautiful and confident! Every time you look at your pictures for years to come, you will regret listening to everyone but YOURSELF!

I have put together a little guideline for you that may make gown shopping a little easier for you:

1. DO NOT bring a lot of people with you. Just bring a couple of people that will support you and not push their ideas on you. Someone who will be objective and supportive.

2. DO NOT venture out of your comfort zone on your wedding day. You want to look like yourself when you look in the mirror!! If you are not use to wearing low cut tops or strapless dresses, don't buy a low cut or strapless gown!

3. MOST IMPORTANT --- Follow your HEART and you will look FABULOUS on your wedding day!

Money Saving ideas....Flowers

MONEY -- MONEY -- MONEY!!! I think everyone is pretty sick of this recession -- especially if you are planning a wedding!!

All brides LOVE flowers and want them EVERYWHERE!! Flowers can eat up a big part of your budget if you are not careful!! I tell my clients when they go to the florist to pick out EVERYTHING they want -- THE SKY IS THE LIMIT -- once the proposal comes, try not to PASS OUT!! :) Seeing everything in black and white will help you decide which flowers are REALLY important and which ones you feel you can do without!

One place where I tell everyone they can save is at the ceremony! Having large arrangements on the alter sometimes just fade into the woodwork. The bride and groom are the decoration and where all guests eyes focus.

Arrangements large enough to be noticed will cost you $200.00 or more depending on the size and type of flowers.

I do agree you need some decoration in the church or ceremony site....my solution to this issue
is to decorate one focal point -- an arch, chairs, pews, pillars, etc.!

Saving money on ceremony flowers, will leave you more money to spend in other areas!

If you really don't like the look without a lot of flowers in the church or ceremony site...have your flowers designed with the reception in mind...then take everything from the ceremony site to the reception site.

COCKTAIL HOUR

If you are having more than 100 people, you really should think about having two bars during your cocktail hour.

Your bar will get hit the hardest during the first hour of your reception (Cocktail Hour). You don't want your guests to wait in a long line to get a drink.....I strongly suggest 2 bars in opposite directions of each other. If your site has a terrace/patio/deck, it would be good to have one outside and one inside.

Summer

This is the first time I have blogged all summer! It has been a summer filled with beautiful weddings.....(LOTS OF RAIN)....and more beautiful weddings!!!

I worked in a new location...Sage Chapel at Cornell University. It is a very beautiful location but very challenging at the same time. The parking areas are not very close to the chapel....and it rained all day.....Despite the dreadful weather it was a beautiful day....the guests had a great time on their wine tour and at the reception at the Ginny Lee Cafe!

My assistant Sue got married in July. It rained while we were in church, but the sun came out soon after and turned out great! It was a wonderful reception at Cobblestone Country Club complete with Sparklers!!!

In addition to all of my weddings my oldest grandson, Ryan, graduated from high school. It was a very emotional day for all of us.....and still is trying to get him ready for college. He will be attending Utica College.

Life is starting to calm down a little, so I thought I would update everyone.

The wedding season is still going strong!!!

BRUNCH

Traditional brunches have been customary for out of town guests ... a nice way to send them off.

That is fine, but sometimes I find some of the guests can not take advantage of the brunch because they have an early flight or they want to get an early start!

A good way to handle this is to make TICKETS to be handed out to guests upon checking in! Make arrangements with the hotel or a near-by restaurant which ever you prefer, to have breakfast available between 6:00 - 11:00 or whichever time you decide. Guests may show up anytime between the designated hours to have breakfast. You will then be charged only for the guests who took advantage of this.

The one draw back is that you usually don't get to see your guests the next day. If you would prefer a traditional brunch....have some tickets available for the guests who need to leave early and can't stick around for the brunch...your won't feel left out and you have provided them with a nice breakfast to thank them for traveling to celebrate your special day.

Planning a wedding is a little stressful with the MOUNTAINS of details that need to dealt with, however, I always find it sad when I see a future bride so stressed out that she is not having fun planning her wedding.

Even after they hire me, and have help and support, they still "freak out" over every little issue!

If you are planning a wedding.....and you are going it alone without a planner.....PLEASE try to make your planning experience fun. Don't take everything so seriously. Stay focused and organized......read my analogy on my website and take it one step at a time!!

Also.....use the budget calculator....that would help with your budget!

Remember....planing your wedding should be one of the most enjoyable things you ever to.....IT IS A REAL LABOR OF LOVE!

2. Try to keep your centerpieces to under $50.00 per table.

3. Select a reception venue that offers all inclusive pricing.

4. Instead of a limo, rent a town car just for the bride and groom.

Just making a few little tweaks will make a HUGE difference in your budget!

Food Tastings

Just yesterday I was asked if it was "standard" to have the reception site charge extra for additional people other than the bride and groom. I have been asked that question a lot lately!

Some places do and some don't, however, it is happening more and more. Some venues don't even offer a tasting anymore and if you insist, even the bride and groom will be expected to pay.

Tastings are meant to be just that, "TO TASTE THE FOOD" to help you with your selection. It is customary to invite the parents of the bride especially if they are paying for the wedding. The parents of the groom usually don't go unless they are also contributing to the cost of the reception. The least amount of people you invite the better!!

Most places will just bring out one plate of each entree that you choose to taste and everyone has a "taste" to see which chicken or fish they like better....again, it is not meant to be a meal.

If your venue is offering a tasting, tell them that you would like to see the "PLATE PRESENTATION." The way the food is presented is just as important as the taste.

Another thing that surprises most people is that most venues do not let you taste the Hors D' oeuvres or salads. Again it depends on the venue.

Also....DON'T FORGET....if you are going to have a tasting, make sure you do it in enough time to order your invitations. You will have to list your dinner choices on the response cards.

Suits vs. Tuxes

The latest trend for the"GUYS" in your wedding are suits.

The big question is....which looks better?? In my opinion, they both look great, however, suits are much more practical and cost effective.

Men's Warehouse often has sales 2 suits for the cost of one. Initially, even with a good sale, the suit will probably cost more than renting a tux, however, everyone needs a suit in their wardrobe and it will be worn for years.

A tux with a vest, shoes, etc...will cost approximately $100.00.....for one day! A suit will cost approximately $150.00- $200.00 and will be used over and over.

The suits don't all have to be the same style, as long as they are all the same color, so if you want everyone to wear black suits and everyone in the wedding already have a black suit, that is fine, they can just wear what they have. You can bring it all together by having them wear the same shirts and ties.

Another concern are the shoes. As long as everyone wears black dress shoes, they don't have to match....in fact...I have never been a fan of the shiny black rented "tux shoes.":)

RECEPTION TIME LINE

When you are planning your time line for your reception you should allow 2 .5 hours for your cocktail hour, introductions, toasts, and dinner.

Below is an example for you to use as a guideline:

6:00 PM Cocktail Hour
6:45 PM Guests are seated and will have a little time to get one last drink before dinner
7:00 PM Introductions, special dances, toasts, blessing
7:30 PM- 8:30 PM Dinner
8:30 PM - Midnight Dancing!

It is important to have a structured time line until dinner is over.....then you are free to just have a GREAT TIME!

ESCAPING AGAIN

Tomorrow morning at 6:00 AM we are once again escaping to the Caribbean! This time my entire family is coming.....I am so looking forward to spending the week with our three grandsons, daughter and son-in-law.

We are going to Grand Cayman and Cozumel Mexico....2 of our favorite islands!

I am leaving my computer at home so I won't be blogging for a week.....I will post pictures when I get back!

TAKE CARE OF YOUR VENDORS

I always have clients ask me if they have to feed their vendors. The answer is YES! The next statement usually is..."My reception venue offers vendor meals." My answer to that is.....NOT A GOOD IDEA!

Vendor meals at reception sites are usually sandwiches. Some vendors, like your photographer and videographer are with you 10 hours or more...they need to eat. Also, more and more vendors have meal clauses in their contracts stating what they expect.

Another thing to think about...some venues want to seat the vendors in a different room than the guests. This also is not a good idea....vendors such as your photographer,videographer and DJ...need to be in the same room as you and your guests in case a special unexpected moment occurs that you would like photographed or announced.

When I am managing a wedding, I always choose a table furthest from the "sweetheart table" or "head table" whatever the case may be to designate for the vendors.

Also, you should inform the staff that you would like them to serve the vendors right after they serve you and your parents..THIINK ABOUT IT....they should be eating when you are so that when you are up and about, they are working, taking pictures, playing music, etc.

As far as paying for their dinners, your reception site should remove the alcohol portion since the vendors won't drink and just pay for he food.

If you take care of your vendors.....they will take EXTRA good care of you! :)

Recession Proof your Wedding

Every bride to be dreams of "HER" perfect wedding that she has been dreaming of since childhood....but unfortunately today's economy makes it a little tougher.

There are ways to cut corners without compromising the design and look of your wedding. If you would like specialty linens, thing of renting toppers rather than floor length. Your reception site usually provides you with white or Ivory linens. Throwing a beautiful topper over that,will make a HUGE difference!

Instead of large floral arrangements for centerpieces, candles, or a floating or a sunken flower makes a lovely centerpiece and willcost considerably less!!

The failing economy may make planning your dream wedding more challenging, but with a little creativity the design of your wedding can be recession proof!

Opening Shower Gifts

If you ask anyone if they like bridal showers they will all tell you that they enjoy being with friends, but they hate sitting for 2 hours watching the bride open gifts!!!

My assistant Sue is getting married in July. Yesterday we gave her a shower. She told me in advance that we had to figure out a way to open the gifts without the usual sitting for hours...we both dislike that part!

So after thinking about it for a while...I came up with a GREAT idea! We had a gift table set up, as the guests arrived they would stop at the gift table and the bride opened her gift with that guest standing with her. Several guests made a comment about how wonderful it was and they love having a little time to spend with the bride. It was very personal.

At one point, several guests arrived at once. The guests stared to mingle and when it was time for the bride to open their gift we called that person and she came back to the gift table.

For an experiment, it was a great success!!! Everyone really enjoyed not having to sit for the traditional gift opening.

Linens by Table Toppers of Rochester

With the economy being what it is, you may find the need to scale back your original wedding ideas. While I think every bride has "GRANDIOSE" ideas...you do not have to spend a fortune to get a elegant look.

One thing that makes a big difference are bright colored linens in wonderful fabrics. Choose a color that will set off your centerpiece and make them"pop." spending money where your guests will be sitting most of the evening will give you the most bang for your buck!

Centerpieces do not have to be large floral arrangements, you can do something simple with "floating" or "sunken" flowers and candles. A colored pillar candle in a hurricane looks great with rose petals and votive candles surrounding it. A small flower can be placed on each napkin spreading the color around the table.

An interesting napkin fold will add some interest to your tables. There are several books available on napkin folding. Some reception sites will fold your napkins anyway you would like...if the fold is too involved, they may let you take the napkins home the week of the wedding so you and your bridal party can fold the them and bring them back all folded and ready to go. Tying the napkins with a simple ribbon makes a HUGE difference!

Menu cards are a very nice touch and cost very little money if you make them yourself on nice card stock. You can tuck them in a napkin with a small flower, a sprig of lavender or a sprig of an aromatic herb such as rosemary or lemon leaves.

Little small details will go a long way with your guests.....so don't forget the ladies room....a flower, bowl of potpourri or scented candle will be very welcoming along with an amenity basket containing essentials. Pick up some nice liquid hand soap and lotion at the Bath and Body shop when they go on sale 3 for $15.00. You can also purchase wonderful scented Yankee Candles at the Yankee outlet for half the price.

Cutting costs does not mean you have to compromise the "look" or "design" of your wedding, and remember, if you want to decorate your church or ceremony site, make sure these decorations serve "DOUBLE DUTY" and can be used at the reception.

Use your creativity and come up with small little details that will set your wedding apart from the "cookie cutter" weddings so when your guests leave they will be talking about your special day for years to come!

Strength

I met a woman Lauren,whose teenage daughter was diagnosed with cancer. She fought it for 2 years and died when she was 19.

Lauren sat and told me her story with such strength and grace that is was overwhelming....I pretty much lost it!!!

My mind went straight to my teenage grandsons.....I thought......if anything happened to them I would totally give up.

I think it is just human nature to complain and feel sorry for themselves when things aren't going your way and think..WHY IS THIS HAPPENING TO ME.....or.......I am so sick of bad things happening.

I realized that my life is great! I may not have the biggest house or a huge bank account...but my life is rich in so many ways.

HAPPY SPRING!!!

Today is the first day of Spring..(Even though there is a coating of snow this morning)!!!

Winter is suppose to be my slow season....then why have I been so busy!! ha ha

Out of the Ordinary has been working on several new projects and Events. We also have been teaching a lot of classes this Winter!!

Tonight is the first event we have been working on..The Nuptial Network Celebrity Bartending Event at the Woodcliff Hotel and Spa. It is open to the public, so I hope that you all try to come and see us!

Next Sunday is our Free Wedding Giveaway. The Nuptial Network is giving away a Free Wedding to a Great Couple...Will and Lori. Lori's father was diagnosed with terminal Cancer in December. Unfortunately, her dad did not make it and passed away a few weeks ago.

We are looking forward to a busy wedding season...(right around the corner!)

TENT WEDDINGS

I received a call this week from a bride-to-be inquiring about our services.

She proceeded to tell me that they had a fairly small budget but they still wanted a nice wedding. Her parents have a great backyard overlooking a beautiful wooded area.They thought in order to save money they would have their reception in a tent in her parents yard.

I think it is a common misconception that tented weddings in your yard or a park is more economical than a traditional venue. NOTHING could be further than the truth.

There are so many things to consider when you are planning a reception in a tent.

The first thing you need to do is contact your insurance company regarding liability./especially if you are serving alcohol.

The next thing is to check with your local zoning regarding ordinances. (e.g., you may not be allowed to play music after a specific time).

Other important considerations are restrooms, parking (You may need a special permit), and proper lighting.

Below is a list of items you will have to rent:

Reception tent (there are many styles/sizes to choose from)
Caterer’s tent (to prepare food) unless you have a large garage the caterer may use.
Dance floor
China
Flatware
Glassware
Condiment holders, salt & pepper shakers, etc.
Tables
Chairs
Linens (napkins, tablecloths, chair covers)
Portable bar & bar supplies
Persons to serve, bartenders (caterers usually supply servers and bartenders)
Hot racks, food warmers
Coffee urns, tea pots, creamers, sugar holders
Portable restrooms
Additional lighting, if necessary

The cost of all of your rentals will be over and above any food and alcohol costs.

For an average wedding of 150 people, the costs of rentals, lighting and restrooms will cost approximately $8,000.00 to 10,000.00! If you want to floor the entire tent or line the tent with satin, it will be more!

You also will need to hire a reputable caterer.

If you are on a strict budget you are much better off having your reception in a traditional venue such as a hotel, restaurant or party facility.

If you do have a larger budget that will support a tented event..there is nothing more beautiful and romantic..HOWEVER....they take a lot more thought and attention to detail!

WINTER BLUES

I haven't posted in awhile...I am a victim of the WINTER BLUES! I have been busy with my weddings,, and the Nuptial Network Bartending Event...but other then that I have spent the last few months reflecting on my life!

I have received lots of e mails asking why I stopped blogging. I am really not sure why!! ha ha ha

I have so many irons in the fire, so many projects both personal and professional that my head spins! ha ha

I have been teaching lots of classes this winter.....Bridal Survival Workshops and "So, you want to Be a Wedding Planner." I really enjoy teaching and helping others to reach their goals. I also have been implementing lots of new services and programs.

My life to this point has been like a roller coaster....and the ride is still going strong. Right now I feel like I am at the top of the roller coaster hanging upside down!! ha ha ha

I am longing for Spring ..........I also am looking forward to a cruise in April with my family. It will be so awesome spending an entire week with my grandsons in an environment where they can't leave to go out with their friends or text messaging incessantly!! They will be stuck in the middle of the ocean with ME!! ha ha (poor kids)!

It has been a true joy watching my precious babies grow into delightful young men and celebrating all of their successes with them. The youngest, Matt in now a black belt in Karate while Ryan and Joel both made all county in football. Ryan (almost 18) was accepted to the first college of his choice, Utica College. I also had the privledge of taking him to his "road test" a real milestone in his life.

All in all I have been very blessed with a wonderful family and lots of loyal friends and my life is good!!

So, hopefully the winter blues will go away soon, and my roller coaster will turn me back upright!

I promise to blog everyday and continue to give all of you information to help you plan your special day.

Think about serving your cake on a station rather than serving as dessert.

A lot of people do not like cake, so they leave it. Also, by the time the cake is served guests are dancing and talking and never go back to their table.

If you have it served on a station, guests can mingle and help themselves to cake whenever theey are ready.

You also may want to think about having a smaller cake and adding pastries and cookies to give your guests a choice.

THROW BOUQUET IDEA

Have your florist tie a ribbon on 5 or 6 individual flowers then tie them together with one big bow.

When it is time to throw the bouquet, untie the big bow and throw. The bouquet will break apart and several people will catch them.

It will be an unexpected surprise!!

Traditionally, wedding and shower gifts were designated to furnish a first home, but today’s lifestyle is more contemporary. Many couples live together before tying the knot, and second marriages are on the rise. These couples are blending two households with furnishings.

Guests are very appreciative of couples who register. This makes their gift giving experience much more time efficient and enjoyable. Bridal registry is a free service offered by most specialty and department stores to engaged couples. Registering should be a joint effort between both you and your fiancé.

Don’t limit yourself to one store. Register at your favorite specialty shops and department stores. When you register include a minimum of one national chain store to accommodate your out-of-town guests.

Most department stores and discount department stores that have a bridal registry are computerized. This makes the process very quick and easy. You will be given a hand-held computerized device. This will allow you and your fiancé to wander about the store entering items you would like to receive.

Register for items in several different price categories. A guest may want to add an inexpensive item to their gift or your office friends may choose to give a more expensive item as a group.

All stores that offer a bridal registry will supply you with cards identifying that you are registered at that store. It is proper etiquette to include these cards in your shower invitations but not in your wedding invitations. Another way of informing guests is to have your families and friends spread the word.

HAPPY BRIDAL SHOW SEASON!!

If you are planning a 2009/2010 wedding and are not planning on hiring a planner, you may want to think about attending a couple of bridal shows.

I don't suggest going to more than 2 or 3 shows or you may become confused and also they get to be very repetitious at that point.

Below are some tips to make the most of each show you attend.

Many vendors will offer a special discount, as a show special, but don't let that intimidate you...take your time and make sure this is the vendor that you want. If you decide to book a service at the show to take advantage of any specials, make sure the vendor provides you with a contract. Take a few minutes to read the contract and understand it before you sign and pay a deposit. Some vendors will allow you to take the contract home to show your fiance or parents and will still let you take advantage of the discounted price if you book within 24 hours...SO ASK QUESTIONS!
Bring self addressed labels, this will speed up the process of registering at each booth.
Bring your appointment book/pda to make appointments.
Bring a camera to take pictures of vendors or ideas you like.
Collect information from all vendors to read over when you get home and are relaxed.
Bring Cash, some shows offer a cash bar or snacks at your own expense.

Also, if you win a prize, make sure you discuss exactly what you have won with the vendor and ask for something in writing as to the terms of that prize...ie...a percentage off a service, etc.

Every year starting around Thanksgiving, you take your life in your own hands going to the grocery store or mall. Everyone is miserable and just plain rude!!

Everyone complains about all of the preparations for the Holiday Season and seem to resent it!!

This year with the economy being what it is, it seems worse! I have to admit, sometimes I fall into this category, I think at one time or another we all get caught up in the negativity of the holiday rather than focusing on the positive.

I think we all seem to loose the true meaning of Christmas. It is not about how much money you spend or how many presents you buy, it is a time to focus on your spirituality and your family. It is a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus.

Start special traditions that will be meaningful to you and your family. Create memories that will last a lifetime. Plan a very special Christmas dinner and don't complain about it.

The next time you run into one of these "grumpy, negative" people in the mall ..... smile and wish them a Merry Christmas. They may not respond or smile....but you will!!!

PLANNING A BACHELORETTE PARTY

When most people think of a "Bachelorette Party" they think of bar hopping, drinking and strip clubs!

More and more women are getting married at an older age, and they are not comfortable with bar hopping!

If the bride isn't all that thrilled about going out drinking there are other fun bachelorette party ideas.

Many beauty salons and day spas are now offering bachelorette parties---you book a room for the entire party, and each guest gets a manicure or pedicure. Often the spa will throw in drinks and munchies or will allow you to bring in your own, which will cost you less. Check with your local salons and day spas for prices and "party specials."

Join forces with the "groomsmen" to combine the bachelor and bachelorette parties. A wine tour is always a fun alternative. Rent a limo, stock it with munchies and hit your favorite trail!

Usually each person involved pays for themselves and everyone "kicks" in for the bride.

The point of the party is to give the bride a fun "send off" into married life......make sure whatever you plan is something she will enjoy and always remember!!!!

YOUR WEDDING REHEARSAL

A wedding rehearsal is really not a rehearsal.........It is only a "walk-through" of what will happen during the ceremony.

It is not like a Broadway play or Hollywood movie, where everyone has to practice all their singing, dancing, acting, and stunt parts together.

If you have readers or musicians, they do not need to take up everyone's time by practicing at the rehearsal. If your readers feel they would like to practice, they should arrive a little early to practice their reading.

Most rehearsals take about 30 minutes or less. It should not take longer than the actual ceremony.
All your bridal party needs to know is when to walk in, where to stand (or sit), and when to walk out.

The purpose is to show people where they fit in so they will hopefully feel a little less stressed about their roles in the actual ceremony.

I really feel that a simple rehearsal or "Walk-Trough" is very important to put everyone's mind at ease and to make the parties involved feel a little more calm and confident.

ADD SOME SWEETS

Every wedding, I see so much cake wasted!! Some people just do not like cake! (Wish I was one of them...ha ha)!

I always suggest to my clients to order cake for less people (example: 200 guests, cake should serve 130 people) and then order pastries and/or cookies. Guests like to have the choice and it always looks great on the table along with an elaborate coffee/tea station...whipped cream, cinnamon sticks, chocolate shavings, etc.

Serving the cake as a dessert at each place setting just does not work! It takes 45 minutes to an hour for the cake to be cut, plated and served. By that time your guests are up dancing, visiting or getting a drink at the bar. Sometimes they never return to their table and never see the cake. It always works much better when the cake is displayed on a station.

I AM BAAAAAACK!

We had a Spectacular vacation!!!! 12 days of PARADISE!!!! We swam with Sea Lions in the Dominican Republic, snorkeled with big blue parrot fish in Aruba and saw giant star fish, sea turtles and Manatees in Curacao and had a GREAT time at Margahritaville in Cozumel!!! (We are both big PARROT-HEADS!!!! I have every Jimmy Buffet song on my I-pod)!

We saw unbelievable sunsets that actually gave you chills!!! It was one of the best vacations I can remember!! We also got a lot of rest and met some wonderful people! The weather was in the 90's most days...we did sail through a tropical depression and it rained 2 days, but it didn't matter because we were on a beautiful ship in the middle of the Caribbean Sea!

It is always nice to come home, but reality hit when we hit got off the plane Sunday night to 38 degree temperatures!! ha ha I was ready to turn around and go back!!!!

This was the view from our balcony on our January, 2008 trip....(Puerto Rico)

I will not be posting for awhile....I am leaving tomorrow for a 12 day Caribbean Cruise. Needless to say I CANNOT WAIT!!

This will be our 13th cruise!! Our first cruise was in 2000 and we became totally addicted!!! Cruises are such EASY vacations, it is all paid before you go, everything is done for you.........the food is great and the entertainment is always Top Notch.

We are leaving from NYC and visiting 5 islands......Dominican Republic, Aruba, Curaco,Belize and Roaton, Honduras. This is a repositioning cruise....we leave from NYC and end up in Miami.

The one thing I am looking forward to the most is our shore excursion in the Dominican Republic......we are going to swim with the Sea Lions!!!!!! You all know how much I love animals...This is going to be the highlight of our trip!

It has been a very busy wedding season, so the rest is very welcomed! :) My husband will not let me take my lap top.....which is probably a good thing!!!!! :)

I will be back on November 9th....I will post pictures and give you all of the glorious details! LOL

PLACE CARDS

Place cards are usually on tented cards and displayed in a row....maybe with some rose petals around them..HOW BORING!!! Ha Ha

I encourage my clients to get creative....the place card table is usually the first thing guests see.

Pictured above are some ideas......below are some things to think about when you are thinking of place card ides.

1. Make sure your place cards are in alphabetical order not in table order...this will make it easier for your guests to find their card.

2. Use an easy to read font when printing your cards...if you are hand writing them, make sure they are legible.

3. display your cards in a manner that will enhance the general "look" of your reception.

4. Be creative....

THE PUMPKIN PATCH

This morning we went to my daughter and
son-in-laws house for breakfast. We walked in to the wonderful aroma of pancakes, sausage and fresh coffee.....however.....there were no babies running to the door excited to see us.......I guess those days are long gone!! My oldest grandson Ryan (17) was at his girlfriend's house for breakfast with her family, the middle one...Joel....(15) was off to a Bills game with a bunch of his friends. He was picked up in hummer limo...no competition for his grandparents!! The youngest one Matt...(13) was home.....but he was very engrossed in video games! :)

After breakfast, I was able to convince Matt to come with me to Powers Farm market to go through the teepees and buy cider and doughnuts....Steve, (my husband) was going to stay at our daughter's to watch football..so....Matt and I also planned to go to a movie!!

On the way to the "Pumpkin Patch" we listened to music and talked. I realized that my babies were all young men now, and I had to enjoy them in a different way!

When the kids were little our "grandma" days were a weekly event......now they don't occur as often ..... but they are even more special!!

OUTDOOR CEREMONIES

More and more the trend is leaning towards outdoor ceremonies . (I had 6 this summer!!)

They are casual, relaxed and there is nothing more beautiful if it is a warm sunny day with a cool breeze!!

WHAT IF IT RAINS ????? WHAT IF IT IS HOT AND STICKY ????? DO YOU HAVE A PLAN B ?????

Below are some tips for you to follow to help make your outdoor ceremony everything you dreamed it would be.

SELECTING THE TIME: You should consider the month of your wedding when selecting the time for your ceremony.

~SPRING OR FALL: Spring or fall: The middle of the afternoon is a good choice when
the sun is the warmest.
~ SUMMER: Late afternoon or early evening works best when the sun is beginning to set
and not blazing on your guests.

PLAN B: Weather can be VERY unpredictable, you never know when a thunderstorm or windstorm may blow in. Make sure there is an inside location available a your site that you can use in case of bad weather. If thee is not, you should rent a tent

What will you do if it rains? The ideal outdoor wedding location has an indoor location waiting just in case.

Many brides and grooms opt to have their ceremony outside and reception inside. In a pinch, the tables can be moved to the back of the room during the ceremony.

A tent is another option, but only for light to moderate rain storms. A heavy rain will soak the ground underneath, leaving guests with soggy and muddy shoes. Make sure any tent you rent is sturdy so it won't flip over, and that it has thick and weighted sides.

MAKE YOUR GUESTS COMFORTABLE: Take a few steps to ensure your guests comfort at an outdoor ceremony:
~ Have large tubs of ice water available as your guests arrive or have your usher hand out bottled water as they seat your guests.
~ Print your programs on fans.
~ Check the weather report the week of the wedding and if the forecast is HOT, rent some fans!
~ If you are not having a tent, have a basket of sunscreen available. Some guests may not realize that they will be out in the sun and not be prepared.

PREPARE FOR THE WIND: Not only do you have to think of the rain and the blazing sun, DON'T FORGET THE WIND!!!

If you are having a unity ceremony, consider a sand ceremony or wine ceremony instead of the traditional Lighting of the Unity Candle. If you must have a candle, make sure you have it in glass, but even then, remember you have to light a match or torch to light the candle and that may be difficult.

Tell your hairstylist that you'll be having an outdoor wedding so she/he can plan a style accordingly..

SOUND SYSTEM: Look into renting a sound system with clip mikes for the bride, groom and officiant. Your DJ or band may be able to easily arrange this for you.

DECORATIONS: One of the bonuses of an outdoor wedding is the natural beauty around you. Work with that, not against it.

If you have an idea in your mind for decorations, make sure you select a site that will support your ideas.

Visit the site a week before your wedding to make sure the grass is mown, the ground raked, and the flowers have bloomed. If your wedding is at a public park, you may want to ask the groomsmen to do this the morning of your ceremony. If it's been an especially cold season, you may need to supplement the flowers with some potted bulbs from a florist. Other decorations you may want to consider include an arch or trellis to focus the ceremony and frame the bride and groom as they say their vows.

MUSICIANS: Strings or a harp are great instruments of an outdoor wedding, but remember, Instruments do not like the hot sun…make sure there is a shady spot under a big tree or arrange for a canopy for the musicians to sit under.

DON’T INVITE PESTS: Ask the management of your ceremony site if they spray for pests. If they don’t, be sure to provide citronella candles or a bug zapper so that your guests won't spend the whole ceremony swatting at the air.

PERMITS: Don't forget to contact your city parks department or other local government to get a permit for an outdoor wedding. Be sure to ask about rules concerning trash removal, candle or torch lighting, and pre-wedding photography.

When client's ask me what color linens their reception site offers I always say "stained" white or "stained ivory." :)

Linens in different colors and textures enhance the look of your reception. Get creative by choosing one linen for your guest tables and something a little different for the cake table.....As long as everything blends and complements each other you can even use a third linen for your place card, gift tables and cocktail tables.

They may cost a little more.....but they are well worth the money!

A UNIQUE ADDITION TO YOUR CAKE/PASTRY STATION

Add a unique touch to your cake, pastries and coffee station....chocolate shot glasses filled with Bailey's Irish Creme.

If you are in the Greater Rochester area, the Chocolate Shot Glasses are available at Encore Chocolates in Irondequoit. If you are from another area, try a specialty Chocolate Shop in your area.

The only problem with offering these are that you can't refill the tray fast enough!!!! THEY ARE ALWAYS A HUGE HIT!!!!

Today's Wedding of Sue Yi and Chris Hunter was held at Shadow Lake's Tent. Being that it is the middle of October, I was quite concerned about the weather.

We were all very grateful when we woke up to a glorious day...72 degrees and bright sunshine....It was almost HOT during their ceremony on the pier.

Sue and Chris's wedding was full of great fall ideas I wanted to share with future fall brides!

KEEP TRACK OF YOUR HOTEL BLOCK

Once you have set up your room blocks at hotels, make sure you keep track of your blocks by calling periodically and asking how many rooms have been reserved.

Ask the hotel representative to email or fax your guest room list so you will be able to make sure that all of your guests who need a room gets one.

Most hotels will only let you hold 10 rooms at a time. By keeping track, you will be able to add more rooms if they are available.

It is always good to advise your out of town guests to book as early as they possibly can so you will be able to manage the block more effectively.

A few weeks ago my daughter told me about A "ritual" on my grandsons football team. (They both play on the varsity team at W. Irondequoit High School)!

The night before each game they have a pasta dinner at the school cafeteria.
All of the parents take turns bringing in food ..... I am still not quite sure how it all happened....but guess who signed up to provide pasta for this week's dinner?

So I woke up this morning and immediately started on my project. (I was really looking forward to this...why..I still am not sure!) I worked at home so I could let my sauce simmer to perfection.

I loaded my car with 5 pounds of pasta, 125 meatballs, sausage, pepperoni, and Italian bread!!! I had no idea what to expect when I arrived!

There were 5 or 6 moms hovering Around buttering bread and mixing
salad....I walked in with all of my food.....and started to help set up.

One by one the boys started filtering in from their practice and sat down at the several tables in the cafeteria....they were surprisingly quiet and patiently waited for their table to be called.

My two grandsons hugged and kissed me, thanked me for being there and told me they loved me in front of their friends...the first shocker....then their friends (whom) I've met several times hugged me....the NEXT SHOCK!!! The biggest surprise was when I realized these kids were all respectful young men....I also realized that my grandsons were 2 of those men.

I HAD SOOOOOO MUCH FUN!!! I have always said I am not a COOKIE BAKING GRANDMA... So I think I shocked myself!!! I left the dinner and stopped in at my youngest grandson's volleyball game....I felt grateful and blessed that I had spent the day making spaghetti!!!

Directions to your Reception

I am often asked what information should be included in a wedding program.

In addition to the "traditional" information such as order of ceremony, music, attendants names, etc., I always suggest including directions to your reception on the back of the program.

You would be surprised the number of people that end up calling your reception venue stating they are "lost" and need directions!

People leave their homes thinking they know where a certain venue is to find out they really don't.

If you have decided not to have programs, print out a direction sheet to have available as your guests leave the ceremony.

JENNIFER AND DAVID

This week's wedding was Flawless! I worked with David and Jennifer for over a year on every detail.

Their wedding reflected their personalities to a T!!!!

They are very "OUTDOORSY" and met running! When David proposed to Jennifer he asked her if she would be his running partner for life!

They are now on their honeymoon in Montana, horse back riding and hiking the beautiful trails.

I will miss seeing their smiling faces every month!
